#15-Black and White Sands - North Island

On my beachcombing trips I collect samples of sand from all of the beaches I visit. In this small bottle I have layered black sand from Murawai (west of Auckland) with pure white sand from Rawawa (Northland).

Both of these sands have industrial uses: The black "ironsands" are magnetic, and are mined for making iron ore. The white sands are pure silica, and are used to make glass.
